Abstract

This paper presents an analytical expression for the optimum tower height of a wind turbine in a given site. The optimum tower height is determined such that to maximize the probability of the effective wind speed range and hence keeping the wind turbine generator working the longest possible time period in that range. A chart is also presented for graphical determination of the optimum tower height. The optimum tower height determined helps as an indicator for wind turbine-site matching; very large values, beyond the practical limits, means that the wind turbine generator characteristics do not match the wind resource at the site.
